Christine Lagarde has been convicted over her role in a controversial €400m (£355m) payment to a businessman. French judges found Ms Lagarde guilty of negligence for failing to challenge the state arbitration payout to the friend of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy The 60-year-old, following a week-long trial in Paris, was not given any sentence and will not be punished.

The head of the International Monetary Fund enjoys a tax-free income of £350,000,days after she attacked Greeks for failing to pay their taxes. Christine Lagarde is a hypocrite after blaming Greece’s economic plight on citizens ‘who are trying to escape tax all the time’. The divorced Frenchwoman, 56, earns a salary of £298,926 which her contract states ‘shall be net of income taxes’. Part of this is paid for by British taxpayers, as the UK contributes 4.5 per cent of the IMF’s resources. This is about £13,500 of Mrs Lagarde’s basic wages. Lagarde, 56, does pay all other “taxes levied on her, including local and property taxes in the US and France”. Lagarde earns more than President Barack Obama and David Cameron, both of whom pay taxes.

The IMF also pays Mrs Lagarde a top-up tax-free sum of £53,490, designed ‘to enable the Fund’s leader to maintain, in the interests of the Fund, a scale of living appropriate to your position as managing director and to the Fund’s need for representation’. In addition, she is entitled to expenses for ‘entertainment’ and travel and hotel costs for her and her partner when the IMF meets in Washington DC. Her five-year contract also entitles her to a pay increase every July.

Mrs Lagarde suggested Greece only had itself to blame for its financial situation. She said Greeks could ‘help themselves collectively’ by paying their taxes.

The same applies to nearly all UN employees – article 34 of the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations of 1961, which has been signed by 187 states, declares: "A diplomatic agent shall be exempt from all dues and taxes, personal or real, national, regional or municipal."Base salaries range from $46,000 to $80,521. Senior salaries range between $95,394 and $123,033 but these are topped up with adjustments for the cost of living in different countries. A UN worker based in Geneva, for example, will see their base salary increased by 106%, in Bonn by 50.6%, Paris 62% and Peshawar 38.6%. Even in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, one of the poorest areas of the world, a UN employee's salary will be increased by 53.2%.

What about global corporations. They pay either no taxes or very little. Why is she not going after them? The answer is that the IMF and World Banks are fronts for private banks and corporation. together they looted the developing world, with the World Bank proposing fraudulent development projects, private corporations getting the contracts which they frequently did not fulfill, and then the IMF comes in as the hitman to collect the debt.
