FORESTRY LOGGING NZ NEWS. SAFE LOGGING

NZ Forestry Association

The New Zealand Forest Owners Association (FOA) represents the owners of New Zealand's commercial plantation forests. It was set up in 1926 and is now one of the country's most influential primary sector organisations.

Its members own or manage around two-thirds of the country's 1.79 million hectares of plantation forests and are responsible for over 80% of the annual harvest. It is there to help the small woodlot holders and those who are not sure with regards to having harvesting etc so one can ask questions to [FOA]

With annual export earnings of $4.7 billion in 2011/12, plantation forestry is New Zealand's third largest export earner. It is a major regional employer, with 6500 individuals employed in forestry and logging in 2010, and 17,615 employed in forestry and first stage processing. FOREST GROWERS LEVY TRUST:

The Forest Growers Levy Trust has set the levy payable for the 2016 levy year (1/1 – 31/12/2016) at 27 cents per tonne of harvested wood material exclusive of GST. This is paid monthly when one is logging and paid by the consultant or the person overseeing the payment structure of a woodlot owner like us. We also pay the Contracting Crew; Truckers etc. The levy rate has remained stable at 27 cents since the implementation of the Levy Order.

It is the responsibility of the FGLT to ensure that the money collected under the levy is appropriately invested in areas of research, development and promotion that will further advance NZ forestry here and overseas. However in saying that most of the export companies are in a position to find their own markets and perhaps this Trust is just another admin that really one does not need? It could mean in future they determine where the export logs go and the exporters themselves may not be able to oversee their own just like the Apple & Pear Board was once??? However early days so lets see.

WORKSAFE:

WorkSafe is committed to helping the forestry industry raise their safety standards and lower the rate of serious harm. This means finding out how that harm is happening, and focusing on the areas where the most forestry fatalities consistently occur. The Safer Forest Harvesting National Programme has run two campaigns in identified high risk areas to date, and there are more to come. Those campaigns use engagement and education to improve knowledge and practice in the forest industry.

http://forestry.worksafe.govt.nz/

Before you start logging we must notify worksafe on the start and also address details. Failure to do so incurs a $5000 instant fine. We make sure all starts are informed. We also make sure all workers have the designated safety gear; are all licensed; and comply with the rules of Worksafe NZ.

In past performances this was not the case that we have witnessed hence why we have decided to use our skills to start our own consultancy.

MANUKA FOR HONEY

Before you start replanting back in Pinus radiate you need to look at what will return the best for your investment. Logging for pinus in 2016 you will find that the net cost to log you only will receive approx 1/2. There is now a levy paid for all logs coming out of the ground whether domestic or export. This levy is paid to the Forestry Assoc formed in 2014 --for amongst other things research. The costs are increasing even though oil prices have dropped but until NZ suffers from the inevitable world crash which must happen then you the woodlot owners will be at the mercy of costs GST and ticketing the boxes. We have found some consultants charge 5% and then add more on to the truckers and the contractors. Worse still the woodlot owners is not given the updates they should have hence why we have decided to come into play. We are also working on FCL containers on backloads to Asia and as we own a shipping company good news will happen soon. The cost for bulk carrier of logs out of NZ is not cheap and by using backloads of containers we feel we can give the woodlot owner even better $$$$.

But getting on to honey: if you wish to plant into manuka then now is the time to order for 2017 plants. There is a world shortage of honey from manuka. Leptospermum varieties [Tea Tree] Leptospermum scoparium offer farmers the best soltions for growing on erosion blocks or where Pine has been cut. There is a grant one can get via the Afforestation Scheme called [ AGS] so please ask us as applications are being accepted as at April 2016.

FORESTRY LOGGING TREES MUST BE SAFE

Heres an example using a 10-15 hectare block :

1/. An excavator harvester is a must for straight logs not pruned. Its fast, clean and quick plus the harvester will grade and cut to suit. A harvester is fast & can make less of a mess due to working in one spot at a time. Normally another ex will bunch then a skidder will bring out to the skid site ready for loading onto logging trucks.

2/. A grapple skidder. If trees are on steep sloped then they need to be recovered by a grapple excavator and then bunched into a stack. A skidder then removes them or a forwarder machine to the front skid site or wherever a skid site is based

3/. Log Skidder: must be used and faster than a bulldozer & less mess. The skidder brings the logs from the back to the harvester. Again no mess and can make the track although the grapple of the excavator is also used by a skilled operator to swish a track esp in sand country.

4/. Another grapple excavator in the front to grade and stack as well as load the logging trucks. These can vary from 20-30 tonne machines but must be capable of taking off trailers and some trucks arry up to 48 tonne of logs.

5/. The beauty about a harvester is that trees can be bunched at the rear & the skidder brings them forward to be cut then stacked. All the branches, debris & offcuts are then in the front of your block on the skid site and so the mess is limited otherwise windrows are stacked at various points

5/. Least but not least the saw cutters who fell the trees & have an important job to do who work ahead of the machines
