NISSAN DATSUN D21 DIESEL MOTOR

5 SPEED 4X4 REPLACE STARTER

MOTOR

Do you have a Nissan D21 1992 -- or a ute up to 1997 that wont turn over then if its not your battery it most likely is the starter motor. In the Nissan D21 with a diesel manual motor its not too much of a problem to take the starter out. But heres a guide. Jack your front up & take the right side wheel off as in the pics & place under your chassis as a secondary precaution. Make sure you use jack stands & chok the rear wheels. Make sure handbrake on. Next you can take the nearest 1x 12mm nut off the solenoid from the side & pull out the top plug on the solenoid to start using a ring spanner on the solenoid bolt near side. The other bolt is fixed.

The yellow circle is a 10mm bolt that you can take off as the starter will squeeze thu the side once you take off the 2x bolts which are 14mm. Use a 3/8" socket set as easier due to the tight squeeze. You can take the bottom bolt using the ratchet or ring spanner..

From the top of the motor you can take the top 14mm bolt off using a 3/8"of 1/2" ratchet with a hollow bar extension to undo & once started use the ratchet only to take this nut off.

the above pic shows the motor without the aircleaner & easy to get at the top bolt again use a 3/8" ratchet with 14mm socket.

The starter can now be removed thru the side as indicated by the yellow circle. Replacement is the reverse of taking it out. Slide the starter motor thru the side & you can put it into place from underneath. You may need to place a lever bar to hold the front of the starter up from chassis to motor as the starter is heavy. Then once in place put the bottom bolt into the starter motor housing by hand & do up then using a 14mm socket or ring spanner to tighten. Once done then do the top bolt from above the motor. Replace 10mm bolt on chassis if you took off. Then slot in the connecting cable & the armature cable & ready to go.....

Some models you need to take out the starter motor thru the front then down & some mechanics will take off the exhaust manifold to get at the starter but the above is what I did to get my starter out of my 1992 Nissan Datsun D21 with a D27 diesel motor. Easy fix. In NZ you can buy starters on Trademe via nzonline_autoparts@outlook.com with approx price $209 including freight in NZ as at April 1st 2023.Supercheap cost is $489 & dont bother getting a starter motor fixed with new bushes & kit as the cost is not worth it. Hope this helps D21 owners---- these are the best pickups that were ever made.......good for well over 400,000kms and solid esp the 4x4 models .......
