For farmers in NZ the CAT 312 BL the best choice for the work of drains, swamps and lake clearing on the farm due to its long reach and greater track wheelbase
 .
The CAT 312BL is an excellent farm machine and contractors. It weighs around 13 tonne but can adapt to many tasks due to its longer stick. It is also more sturdy due to its larger wheekl base.
HOW TO START:
312BL START: To start if engine is cold then you can preheat by turning the key start left for 30 seconds. The heater indicator on thr monitor will come on. Then turn right to start the engine. We normally set to 2 notches on the BL model when starting. The indicator lights will shine on the top of the monitor when you turn one right.
The hydraulic lever on the seat when up stops any movement. When down then youre ready to work. You cannot get in if the hydraulic lever is in the up position so very good for safety. Always make sure you clear under the lever foot pedals as easy to get muck accumulating underneath. Costly if you cannot move a track properly & need an outcall??
Battery compartment on the nearside or left side facing forward. The key switch on the bottom left allows you to turn the batteries off when not in use so the batteries are OFF. The Red button on the bottom left is a circuit breaker reset button. If depressed its fine. If not or it won't stay depressed then check your electrical circuits
On the right side is the key start and engine speed contro to set. The green button cuts the engine if one wants to stop. If using on higher revs then you can turn the key off and allow the engine to shut down without you turning it off. This allows the turbo to wind down and execute a stop after about 60 seconds.

FUEL CONSUMPTION
Cat 320 for 7 hours average 6 gallons per hour consumption
Cat 311- 312 - 315 Excavator On full throttle uses about 4 gallons per hour depending on the work which is 30-35 gallons in 8 hours on the hour meter.
Quick hitches make for easy switching of buckets etc but make sure you either wire strop them or use sheeving sleeves over the hydraulic hoses.
The CAT311 with CAT log skidder diff?
CL on a cat excavator? is a Model designator. The C is generally stands for the the 3rd generation of that particular model machine. The L usually designates that machine as having a longer (than normal) set of crawler tracks. An example would be Cat 320CL Excavator or the 312 BL
The 312B has a 3064 turbo diesel engine producing 84 flywheel HP (FWHP). It comes standard with a power and work mode selector including a new user mode, and very good operator seat and console with longer stick.
