CAT 312 EXCAVATORS MAINTENANCE & SERVICES IMPORTANT

CAT 312 the best choice for the work of drains, swamps and lake clearing on the farm due to its long reach and greater track wheelbase esp with the CL and BL models. However the normal 312 are also good. Dome farmers prefer the early 90s models with no computer as this can be a headache when one has to have the system dianosed. However CAT excavators can run for over 20,000 hours OK although many have hydraulic issues etc depending on whon the operator is. Maintenance levels can vary from 1 week to monthly 50 to 250 hours but its important to keep a log book in case you wish to sell at a later stage. This allows the buyer to see what you have done in replacement parts etc.

.

The CAT 312BL is an excellent farm machine and contractors. It weighs around 13 tonne but can adapt to many tasks due to its longer stick. It is also more sturdy due to its larger wheekl base. The above show the motor and trub unit with easy to get at oil dipstick from outside the cover.

The engine has the specs stamped on the engine cover as per above. Always quote the serial number when buying parts.

To top up the oil just lift the rubber cap as per above and fill with diesel oil

The turbo unit is easy to get at as well. You can buy stainless exhausts which last a lot longer than the metal ones.In the radiator always use coolant additive but not straight coolant to get a 3-6% concentration of cooling system to stop corrosion.

CHECK YOUR TRACKS:

An easy way to check the tightness of your tracks is to stand on the track where you climb into the cab. Stand on the part of the track and if it dips then its OK. A tight track will normally cause a squeal and will place strain on your rollers so check often. If a track comes off then always put the track on the sprocket first then over the idler not the other way round. You will need to bleed the nipple housing in the cavity between the tracks to break the seal/grease and have the idler move back to loosen. Once the track is on then tioghten the bolt and regrease until you get the track to its tight position. Check your pins for wear and idler.

On top of that we are having made rakes and grab rakes for the clearing of forestry blocks so will keep you posted etc. There are many 312 A, B C D & now the newer E models in NZ

FUEL CONSUMPTION

Cat 320 for 7 hours average 6 gallons per hour consumption

Cat 311- 312 - 315 Excavator On full throttle uses about 4 gallons per hour depending on the work which is 30-35 gallons in 8 hours on the hour meter.

Quick hitches make for easy switching of buckets etc but make sure you either wire strop them or use sheeving sleeves over the hydraulic hoses.

The CAT311 with CAT log skidder diff?

CL on a cat excavator? is a Model designator. The C is generally stands for the the 3rd generation of that particular model machine. The L usually designates that machine as having a longer (than normal) set of crawler tracks. An example would be Cat 320CL Excavator or the 312 BL

The 312B has a 3064 turbo diesel engine producing 84 flywheel HP (FWHP). It comes standard with a power and work mode selector including a new user mode, and very good operator seat and console with longer stick.
