CATERILLAR D4-7U BULLDOZER IN NZ

FOR RESTORATION OF STEERING CLUTCHES

The D4 work to remove and repair steering clutches is not as bad as a D2 but when a machine is old so are the nuts and bolts. We found by hitting the bolts with a hammer it loosened them a bit but it helps to have a good ratchet heavy duty lever arm etc to take the 3/4 bolts off. In the book it says you can take the the whole rear end off as one but as we want to redo this piece by piece we took off first the seat/ rear tank first then the fender plates and then the top cover. Once done then we will work on the tracks.

The Caterpillar D4 -JU Series READY for restoration & steering clutches. You must remove seat/tank combination first then inspection plate at rear of the transmission cover & loosen steering brake clutch adjustment until free of the sockets , loosen brake adjustment & swing brake pedals forward, make a strop & attache to cover. Remive cover & make sure flywheel clutch lever is in the forward position to prevent the shaft cams in the cover from damageing the gear shift interlock assembly.

Rear tank and seat already removed and one fender. If taking each fender off remember these are heavy so make sure you strop to hold these in place. If undoing the bolts underneath the fender can do damage to you. We used long lever ratchets and used the tracks to brace each fender when they dropped. VERY IMPORTANT .
