CATERILLAR D4-7U BULLDOZER IN NZ

REMOVING THE BACKEND TO GET AT STEERING CLUTCHES

The D4 work to remove and repair steering clutches is not as bad as a D2 but when a machine is old so are the nuts and bolts. We found by hitting the bolts with a hammer it loosened them a bit but it helps to have a good ratchet heavy duty lever arm etc to take the 3/4 bolts off & use CRC or a combination oil loosening agent like diesel fuel and oil mix. Remove inspection plate on rear of transmission cover & loosen steering clutch adjustments until free of their sockets before lifting off the main transmission cover above. Loosen the brake adjustment & swing pedal forward then use a sling (wire strop) to take the cover up and off the transmission section as very heavy. Check flywheel clutch lever is in the forward position to prevent the cams on the shaft in the cover from damaging the gear shift interlock section & the cover will lift off easy.

Exposing the rear steering clutches. You will need to loosen off the adjusting pins to remove the cover. These are shown above. These have rusted on and the bolts holding the brake shoes were worn right down

Both adjusting pins have been loosened off as shown here. On the left the brake pad nuts have rusted on & these will be replaced with the shoes which were worn out.
